What type of fencing do you teach?

IFA teaches the modern sport of Olympic-style, competitive foil fencing. We do not teach theatrical-style stage combat or “Renaissance Fair “fencing (go here to do that).

What weapon should my child learn?

There are three weapons in modern fencing: Foil, Sabre and Épeé. We teach Foil only. The Foil is the most appropriate beginner's weapon, yet it is still considered to be the "main event" in National and International competition.

What equipment/clothing do I need to start?

IFA provides all the equipment you need, but you’ll want to wear athletic-style sneakers (no boots or sandals), a t-shirt and long shorts or loose-fitting pants. (Jeans are not recommended.)

What are your hours?

IFA operates between 6-9pm, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. (Feel free to drop by and watch our beginner classes or competition training at any time.)

How much does the Beginning program cost? How long does it run?

Beginner classes are $50 per 4-week session. ($10 registration/ $40 coach fee.) The class covers footwork/defense/attacks and finally the fencers bout with each other using electronic scoring equipment. Each class is 1 hour per week, but on the 4th week, beginners can stay longer to fence IFA club members.

Is 4 weeks long enough to learn how to fence?

The short answer is “no,” but as an experienced elementary teacher and fencer, our coach has devised an accelerated “get your feet wet” program.  You can take the beginner class a total of three times and then join the International Fencing Academy as an “Advanced Beginner.”

How much does it cost to be a club member?

We have 2 main programs:

            RECREATIONAL Fencer:

You can continue paying $50 per month to attend from 6-9pm ONCE per week.

(Includes 1 footwork class and 2 hours of Open Fencing per week)

            COMPETITIVE Fencer:

Pay $75 per month to attend as often as you like. (IFA is open 9 hours per week.)

Includes 2 footwork classes and as much Open Fencing as you want each week.

What about Private Lessons?

To improve in fencing requires one-on-one coaching. You can purchase 120 minutes of Private Lesson time for $100. You use the coupons in 10-minute increments however you likecombined/weekly, etc. See schedule for times.
